What Are Hollow Concrete Blocks Used For?
Explore common uses of hollow concrete blocks, key product selection factors and mould design considerations for concrete block production.
What Is a Hollow Concrete Block?
Hollow concrete blocks are masonry units manufactured by forming and compacting a mixture of cement, aggregates and water in a mould. The mould geometry defines the external dimensions, cavity arrangement, face shells and internal webs.
Production mixes may contain aggregates such as sand and crushed stone, or lightweight aggregates such as pumice. Aggregate selection and mix properties influence the weight and performance of the finished product.
Where Are Hollow Concrete Blocks Used?
Hollow concrete blocks are used in the walls of residential, commercial, industrial and agricultural buildings. Common applications include internal partition walls, external infill walls and appropriately designed boundary walls.
For loadbearing applications, both the blocks and the masonry system must meet the relevant project and standard requirements. A hollow profile alone does not establish whether a block is suitable for loadbearing or non-loadbearing use.
Hourdi floor blocks and concrete paving stones serve different functions. Their product geometry and manufacturing moulds should be assessed according to their respective applications.
How to Select a Block for Its Intended Use
Product selection should consider the wall’s function, project dimensions, required strength and applicable performance requirements. Overall block width alone is not sufficient to determine suitability for an application.
Thermal, acoustic and fire performance should not be inferred solely from the number of cavities or the low weight of a block. These properties should be assessed using relevant technical data for the product and the complete wall system.
Interlocking edge profiles can help position adjacent blocks during laying. However, an interlocking design does not automatically eliminate the need for mortar in every application.
How the Application Influences Mould Design
The required block design determines the mould cavity dimensions, core geometry, face shell thicknesses and web arrangement. Where half blocks or corner units are needed alongside full blocks, these products should also be included in production planning.
The number of blocks produced per cycle and their arrangement within the mould depend on product dimensions, production board size and the machine’s usable production area. The mould box, tamper shoes and mounting details are prepared for the specific machine configuration.
Requesting a Hollow Block Mould Quotation
Block Mould manufactures hollow concrete block moulds according to the product drawing and machine configuration. The intended application, external dimensions, product height and cavity geometry should be clearly defined for technical assessment.
To request a quotation, send your machine brand and exact model, production board dimensions and product drawing. If you are continuing production of an existing block, include photographs of the product, current mould and machine.
