Mould maintenance should not begin only after a serious production problem occurs. The mould box, cavities, dividers, tamper shoes, connection points and moving components should be checked periodically. Early detection of wear usually makes repair easier and more economical.
Before deciding whether a mould should be repaired or replaced, its condition must be evaluated technically. Product dimensions, cavity wear, wall thickness, structural condition and repair cost should all be considered.
Signs That a Concrete Block Mould Needs Maintenance
The mould should be inspected when the produced blocks begin to show dimensional differences, damaged edges, irregular surfaces or inconsistent wall thicknesses. These problems may indicate wear in the mould cavities, dividers or tamper shoes.
Unusual movement, increased clearance between components, cracks, deformation or loose connection points are also important warning signs. Continuing production without inspection may increase product defects and make the eventual repair more difficult.
The condition of the mould should be evaluated together with samples of the finished concrete products. Product measurements often reveal wear that may not be clearly visible during a visual inspection.
Which Parts of a Concrete Block Mould Should Be Inspected?
A complete mould inspection should include the mould box, cavities, dividers, tamper shoes, supporting parts, connection points and any movable components.

When Can a Concrete Block Mould Be Repaired?
Repair may be appropriate when the main mould structure remains dimensionally stable and the wear is limited to repairable or replaceable components.

- * Localised cracks that have not caused major deformation
- * Moderate cavity wear that can be restored without changing the required product dimensions

Before any repair, the remaining wall thickness, structural condition, dimensional accuracy and expected repair cost should be evaluated. Welding or machining should not be carried out without considering how the repair may affect the mould geometry, hardness and future service life.
A repair is worthwhile only when the mould can return to reliable production without compromising product dimensions or machine safety.
When Should a Concrete Block Mould Be Replaced?
Replacement should be considered when the mould can no longer produce products within the required dimensional tolerances or when repair would not restore reliable production.
Typical replacement conditions may include:
- Severe wear in the mould cavities
- Major deformation of the mould structure
- Cracks affecting structural safety
- Excessive thinning of mould walls or dividers
- Repeated failures after previous repairs
- Product dimensions that remain inconsistent after adjustment
- Repair costs approaching the cost of a new mould
- Damage that may create a risk for the machine or operator
The decision should not be based only on the visible condition of the mould. Product measurements, structural condition, remaining material thickness, repair history and expected future production volume should also be considered.
Replacing a heavily worn mould at the correct time may prevent repeated production stoppages, poor product quality and unnecessary repair expenses.
