Which Signs Require Inspection?
Changes in product dimensions, irregular edges and increased working clearances indicate a need for inspection. Check mould cavities, internal dividers, tamper shoes and connections.
These symptoms are not always caused by mould wear. Machine settings and production conditions should also be assessed. If cracks, significant deformation or abnormal contact are detected, stop production and follow safe shutdown and isolation procedures before inspection.
When Is Repair Appropriate?
Repair may be considered when the main structure remains dimensionally stable and damage is limited to repairable or replaceable components. Depending on the mould design, tamper shoes, wear plates or certain connection parts may be replaced.
Before welding or machining, assess the material, remaining wall thickness and the effect of the proposed work on mould geometry. Whether a crack can be repaired should not be determined from photographs alone.
When Should Replacement Be Considered?
Replacement should be considered when severe wear, major deformation or recurring failures prevent the mould from maintaining required product dimensions and safe operation.
Compare repair costs with the expected remaining service life, production downtime, rejected products and the cost of a new mould.
What to Send for a Technical Assessment
Provide the machine brand and exact model, mould operating history, previous repairs and measured product variations. Include overall photographs of the mould, close-ups of worn areas and photographs of the finished blocks.
