Material Options for Hollow Block and Hourdi Moulds

Block Mould offers three material and performance options for custom hollow block mould and hourdi mould manufacturing.

Standard Series – S235JR / EN 10025-2 (St37-2 1.0038)

Standard hollow block and hourdi moulds are manufactured using S235JR structural steel, commonly known by its former designation St37-2. This option provides a practical balance between manufacturing cost, structural strength and reliable performance for standard production requirements. Professional Series – S355J2 / EN 10025-2 (St52-3 1.0577)

Professional hollow block and hourdi moulds are manufactured using S355J2 structural steel, formerly known as St52-3. Its higher strength and structural rigidity make it suitable for demanding production conditions, intensive vibration and longer operating cycles. Hardox Series – Hardox® 400, Hardox® 500 or Hardox® 600

For production environments exposed to intensive concrete abrasion, Block Mould manufactures Hardox Series moulds using Hardox® 400, Hardox® 500 or Hardox® 600 wear-resistant steel according to the mould design and operating requirements.

  • Hardox® 400 for applications requiring balanced wear resistance, strength and manufacturability
  • Hardox® 500 for mould components exposed to higher concrete abrasion
  • Hardox® 600 for specially evaluated applications requiring very high wear resistance

Hardox® is a proprietary wear-resistant steel product range manufactured by SSAB. For this reason, Hardox grades should be stated by their original product names rather than presented as direct equivalents of generic international steel grades. SSAB

The appropriate material series is selected according to the concrete product, mould construction, vibration conditions, expected production intensity and customer requirements. Different mould components may be evaluated separately according to their structural and wear functions.

Material and Heat Treatment for Paving Stone Moulds

Paving stone moulds are manufactured using normalized C45E+N steel (Ck45 material number 1.1191 SAE/AISI 1045 JIS S45C). This medium-carbon steel provides the machinability, strength and hardening capability required for precision paving stone mould manufacturing. After precision machining, the female mould and the male mould, also known as the tamper head, are subjected to separate controlled hardening processes. A working-surface hardness of 57–62 HRC is achieved to increase resistance against concrete abrasion and repeated production cycles.

Separate heat treatment of the female and male mould components supports:
