How to Store and Protect Concrete Block Moulds


Correct cleaning, lubrication and storage help protect concrete block moulds against corrosion, concrete buildup and unnecessary damage. Learn how to prepare and store a mould safely between production periods.


Why Correct Mould Storage Matters


Concrete block moulds are exposed to vibration, pressure, moisture and abrasive concrete mixtures during production. When a mould is removed from the machine and stored without proper preparation, concrete residue, corrosion and accidental damage may shorten its service life.

Correct cleaning, inspection and storage help protect mould dimensions, machined surfaces, tamper shoes, connection points and movable components. These precautions are especially important when a mould will remain unused for several weeks or months.

Clean the Mould Before Storage

Concrete residue should be removed before the mould is placed in storage. Hardened concrete buildup may retain moisture, restrict moving components and make future cleaning more difficult.

The mould box, cavities, dividers, tamper shoes and connection areas should be cleaned carefully. Cleaning tools and methods should not damage machined surfaces, edges or heat-treated components.

After cleaning, make sure that no concrete remains in narrow spaces, bolt areas or moving mechanisms.

Inspect the Mould for Wear or Damage

Storage is a good opportunity to inspect the mould before the next production period.

Check the following points:

  • * Cracks, deformation or damaged welds
  • * Wear inside mould cavities and dividers
  • * Bending or uneven wear on tamper shoes
  • * Loose bolts and connection points
  • * Increased clearance between moving components
  • * Concrete buildup in narrow or moving areas
  • * Damage to machined and contact surfaces

Any serious damage should be evaluated before the mould is stored. Early repair may prevent the problem from becoming more expensive or affecting future production.

Dry the Mould Completely

The mould should be completely dry before protective oil or corrosion inhibitor is applied. Moisture trapped on steel surfaces may cause corrosion during storage.

Pay particular attention to cavities, joints, bolt holes, lower surfaces and areas with limited air circulation. If the mould has been washed with water, allow sufficient time for complete drying.

Protect Machined Surfaces Against Corrosion

Exposed steel and machined surfaces should be protected with a suitable corrosion-preventive product. Apply protection according to the product manufacturer’s instructions.

Moving components may also require lubrication according to their operating conditions. Excessive oil or grease should be avoided, especially in areas where contamination may affect future concrete production.

Before the mould is returned to service, protective products must be removed from any surfaces where they could affect the concrete mixture or finished product.

Store the Mould Indoors Whenever Possible

The best storage location is a clean, dry and ventilated indoor area.

The mould should not be placed directly on the floor. Use a stable pallet, steel support or suitable storage frame to keep it above ground level and protect its lower surfaces.

The storage support must carry the mould securely without causing deformation. The mould should also be protected against impact from forklifts, cranes, vehicles or other stored equipment.

Protect the Mould During Outdoor Storage

Outdoor storage should be used only when a suitable indoor area is unavailable.

Place the mould on a strong support above ground level. Protect it from rain, snow and direct water exposure, but do not seal it in a way that traps moisture and prevents ventilation.

Protective covers should allow air circulation. The mould should be inspected more frequently because outdoor temperature changes and humidity increase the risk of corrosion.

Check Moulds During Long-Term Storage

A mould stored for a long period should not be left without inspection.

At planned intervals:

  • * Check for corrosion and moisture
  • * Renew corrosion protection when necessary
  • * Inspect the cover and storage supports
  • * Confirm that no water has collected around the mould
  • * Check moving parts and connection points
  • * Make sure the mould has not been struck or displaced

Regular checks are especially important in humid, coastal or outdoor environments.

Before Returning the Mould to Production

Before installation, remove storage protection and inspect the mould again.

Confirm that:

  • * All components are clean
  • * Moving parts operate correctly
  • * Bolts and connections are secure
  • * No corrosion or deformation has developed
  • * Tamper shoes and mould cavities are undamaged
  • * Machine connection areas are ready for installation

The mould should not be forced into operation if abnormal contact, restricted movement or structural damage is detected.
